The No Quarry Community Group recently met with Member for Kalkallo Ros Spence, to discuss the ongoing concerns surrounding the proposed quarry in Wallan.
The meeting shed light on various community worries and frustrations regarding the delay in the quarry decision and the impacts it could have on the local area. During the meeting, community members expressed their gratitude for Ms Spence’s ongoing support and advocacy on their behalf.
They highlighted the significant delays in the decision-making process, the unnecessary stress and anxiety being caused, and questioned why there hasn’t been more direct engagement with the community by the planning minister.
Ms Spence acknowledged the frustrations of the community and expressed her own concerns about the delay in decision-making, emphasising the importance of not only addressing the quarry issue but also ensuring timely infrastructure development for existing residents.
One of the key points raised by community members was the lack of consideration for the everyday impacts on local residents and the potential destruction of homes if the quarry were to proceed.
Concerns were also raised about the lack of clarity regarding rehabilitation efforts post-quarry closure and the desperate need for more housing in this growing urban corridor.
Ms. Spence assured the community that she would continue to advocate on their behalf and would follow up with the planning minister regarding the status of the decision and the community’s concerns.
She also committed to requesting a copy of the ministerial advisory report and seeking clarification on any time limits for a decision.
Community Group Spokesperson Skye Forster said that the group appreciated Ms. Spence’s dedication to representing the community’s concerns.
“The community is deeply frustrated by the lack of transparency and communication regarding the quarry decision. We need more accountability from decision-makers. We want to meet with the planning minister directly to discuss our concerns and ensure our voices are heard” Ms Forster said.
The meeting concluded with both Ms Spence and the community renewing their commitment to maintaining open communication and continuing to advocate for the best interests of the local area.
