Seven community groups, including a food bank, wildlife shelter and historical society, have been awarded a grant as part of Broadstead’s $10,000-plus Community Grants Program.

Diversified property and investment group Jinding, which is undertaking the Broadstead Kilmore community off Quinns Road, launched the grants in April in partnership with sales and marketing specialist red23.

Local groups, not-for-profit organisations and charities were encouraged to apply for the grants to assist with projects and initiatives to help grow their services in the Kilmore area.

A panel of judges, comprised of North Central Review general manager/ editor Lauren Duffy, Mitchell Shire’s Gavin Wilson, Red23’s Terry Portelli and Jinding’s Chris Ravat, assessed the applications to select the seven recipients.

The recipients are:

  • Kilmore Historical Society: $2000 for a new book on Kilmore Walk, which will guide people on four walking routes through Kilmore’s historic areas.
  • Murrindindi Ranges Wildlife Shelter: $2000 to help run a large shelter for 150 injured and orphaned animals and to provide a 24/7 rescue service to Murrindindi and Mitchell shires.
  • Love in Action Broadford: $2000 to purchase food, which it supplies to families in need in Kilmore, Broadford and surrounds.
  • The Toy Library of Kilmore: $1400 to replace its 15-year-old laptop to improve its offering of providing toys to children, including those with special needs.
  • Kilmore District Men’s Shed: $1305 to replace old equipment/units so members can pursue their activities in a safe and economical manner.
  • Zonta Club of Mitchell: $1000 for its Dignity Bag project, which provides cloth bags filled with toiletries and sanitary items for girls and women needing emergency supplies.
  • Kilmore Wallan RSL Sub Branch: $679 for a new printer to submit claims on behalf of veterans.

Jinding’s developments general manager Andrew Ashwood said the company fielded applications from a diverse range of not-for-profit groups in the region.

“We were very impressed by the strong calibre of the applications, which goes to show the sheer depth of community spirit in Kilmore and the surrounding region,” he said.

“It was extraordinarily difficult to whittle the list down to just seven recipients and we look forward to supporting more community organisations through next year’s grants program.

“Kilmore is such a special area, not just because of its unique heritage buildings and strong sporting spirit, but the way the entire community pitches in to make it a better place.

“We’re very pleased we chose the area for our new Broadstead Kilmore community, which has been well received by buyers.”

Broadstead is being developed on a 60-hectare parcel off Quinns Road and will feature 500 homes alongside 11 hectares of green space. The first stage of land is now selling.
