AN unnamed park in the Wallara Waters Estate in Wallan is yet to be formally named, with Mitchell Shire Council calling for public input on preferred options.
Developers of the park, Frasers Property Australia, approached council with possible suggestions based on topographical features.
Taylors Creek Park, Strathaird Reserve or Bidi Park were possible options for the park situated at Bale Way, Mount Eliza Avenue, Warranga Avenue and Yan Yean Avenue.
Council discussed options at last week’s meeting, deciding ‘Bidi Park’ was the preferred name that will be put forward to the community for a 30-day consultation period.
“Council does support the naming of the park, and the suggested and preferred name is Bidi Park,” Cr Annie Goble said.
“What’s interesting about this recommendation is that it means ‘kick ball’ in the Woiwurrung language and it was used by the Kulin Nation.”
The Indigenous language was used in the Wallan area and it is believed Woiwurrung people traditionally played football games.
“The benefit to this suggestion is that there’s Indigenous connections, I hope that it’s put forward to the community when considering the park’s name,” Cr Goble said. She added the consultation period would allow people to perhaps make a better suggestion.
