Race from different states

For every kilometre he ran, former Assumption College Kilmore student Zac Pettit passed the word about osteosarcoma—a type of bone cancer he lost his best friend Zane Collier to in 2015.

Mr Pettit founded not-for-profit organisation It’s Time To Know Osteosarcoma (T2KO) in 2021.

He had set up the organisation wanting to never forget about the word, and honour Mr Collier’s memory and legacy.

Over the course of 13 days last month, Mr Pettit and his running partner Brandon Lee Grech embarked on a remarkable memory, starting from different states to help fundraise for a 6-year-old girl from Queensland who is battling osteosarcoma.

Running separately but with a shared goal, the duo made their way down to Assumption College Kilmore from Adelaide and Sydney on August 18, bringing their mission full circle to where Mr Pettit and his late best friend met.

His most challenging ultramarathon yet, the journey from Adelaide was full of highs and lows for Mr Pettit, encountering numerous acts of kindness from people along the way.

“The beauty of it was witnessing people come together to help myself on the journey, or to get through whatever the next hurdle was in front of me,” he said.

“I had people let me stay at their house, in their cottages, I had osteopaths work me for free in a farm … so I think that a lot of what I witnessed was people coming together to help someone else, whether it would be me or the end goal, and those in need.

“As an individual, having my pa call me up—he’s suffered with cancer for half my life, and he’s a very fit and healthy man … being super proud of his grandson, I think that was a really proud moment for myself.”

The final moments of the run provided a fitting conclusion for the duo, as they watched everyone come together at the college in a powerful display of unity and support.

“You kind of feel very overwhelmed and pretty exhausted, there’s a lot going through your head … it was a beautiful moment that Brandon and I will save for the rest of our lives, and I think everyone there will as well,” Mr Pettit said.

“The mentality behind our motto ‘Refuse to give up,’—everyone embraced it on the journey, whether they were part of the journey for a couple of hours or came with myself or Brandon for the whole duration.”

Seymour Lion’s leaders locked in

Seymour Football Netball Club (SFNC) has announced its A Grade netball coach and senior coaches for the 2025 Goulburn Valley League (GVL) season.

Current Senior Coach Ben Davey has recommitted to the role for another season and will be joined by Jack Murphy, who has made the step up from senior assistant coach to senior co-coach.

The duo will continue to draw on their extensive football experience—Davey with his senior GVL premierships and time in North Melbourne’s coaching ranks, and Murphy with his considerable career in the Victorian Football League.

SFNC President Gerard O’Sullivan said the club was thrilled to reappoint Davey and Murphy for the 2025 season.

“Ben has been huge for our club since returning as senior coach, and we’re so lucky to have a coach of his knowledge, experience, and passion at The Den,” he said.

“Murph has put in an incredible amount of work as a senior assistant coach over the past couple of seasons, and his promotion reflects his dedication to the Lions.

“We have full confidence in both Ben and Murph, and look forward to a successful 2025 with them in charge of a fantastic group of young footballers.”

Following Ellie Fuhrmeister’s recent resignation, the SFNC has appointed A Grade star Casey Adamson as the new A Grade coach.

“Casey has been a superstar player for a long time at the Lions and is eager to take on the coaching role,” Mr O’Sullivan said.

“She’s played professional netball and knows exactly what it takes to taste success in September.

“To be able to appoint such a quality netballer as A Grade coach from within our ranks is fantastic for the club.”

By Jo Kubeil and Ava Schwebach

Last week in harness racing, a Wallan leasee of Let her Roll shared in the prize money when the filly came second at Melton Entertainment Park’s harness racing track.

The Let her Roll syndicate entered the bay pacer filly into race six of the Captain Crunch Vic Bred Super Series for 2YO fillies, with 24-year-old James Herbertson driving, and were thrilled when Let her Roll came second with the prize money reaching the value of $24,000.

Leasee Julie Wood was excited about the filly’s prospects.

“The group of us who own her are having a lot of fun. We have a horse and love going to the races,” she said.

On Sunday, October 27, from 10am–4pm, the Mitchell Shire and Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) will be hosting the Seymour Fishing Festival at Goulburn Park for those who are looking for a fun day out with the family.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes says this festival is full of ‘Activities for all ages and plenty of opportunities to learn a new skill,’ or to just ‘Simply enjoy the great outdoors.’

This free event is sure to have something for everyone as it includes fishing clinics for kids, live music for entertainment, trout stocking, and seafood cooking demonstrations.

It’s also sure to get the next generation hooked on fishing through their eight Learning To Fish VicFishKids sessions for those who are new to fishing, with rods and baits provided.

Leading these sessions are the Women in Recreational Fishing and Boating (WIRFAB) volunteers from Fishcare, and the Sugarloaf Creek Angling Club. The VFA’s Snobs Creek hatchery will also be giving kids the opportunity to catch rainbow trout in a welcoming and secure environment.

For those in love with seafood, there will be a local chef attending the festival from the Prince of Wales Hotel to display some delicious recipes, including trout to sample at the festival or cook at home for friends and family.

And for those looking for something different, this free event also includes a range of attractions such as fish anatomy explainers with their education trailer, fish themed activities for kids, a fishing simulator, hot food for sale, and animal experiences, including gliders, dingoes, pythons, and crocodiles.

The kids are guaranteed to not get bored at this event with varied activities like face painting, plaster arts, a bubble performer, and a magician.

“Come join in the fun and catch a new hobby at Seymour’s Goulburn Park on October 27,” Ms Symes said.

Kilmore Golf Club ladies golf tournament a success

By Jo Kubeil and Ava Schwebach

Last Thursday, the Kilmore Golf Club (KGC) hosted their annual Jan Reeves Ladies Open Tournament, with players and teams coming from near and far to compete for the esteemed trophy and prizes.

The ladies welcomed 2023 cup winner and former Kilmore resident Jacqui Baker to the course, who is now a member of the Penninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club.

KGC Lady Secretary Trish Grinter said the event was well attended.

“It’s held annually and we get players from all different clubs. We had 37 [players] today,” she said.

“There didn’t seem to be any hiccups, the scores weren’t brilliant, but they said it was pretty difficult out there.”

Following a hot lunch, the awards were presented by Kelly Scott on behalf of T J Scott & Son Funeral Directors, the tournament’s sponsor.

“We’re a community business so we love being able to give back to the community, and it’s great to support these events as it takes a lot of work to put them together,” she said.

Ms Scott presented the Jan Reeves Memorial Open 2024 cup to Jacqui Baker who scored 87 on the course, and runners up to KGC member Cheryle Andersen, with a score of 88.

Kilmore’s Sophie Banon finished best in the A Grade with 91-19-72, while Romsey’s Jennifer Hartley finished on top in the B Grade with 100-26-74, and finally from Yea Golf Club member Christine Simmons finished best in the C Grade with 100-32-68.

In the team’s event, Romsey Golf Club member Darlene Baker finished on 77 net, and Sophie Banon on 72, while Trentham Golf Club member Lisa Caines finished on 74 net c/b with the team’s score totalling 223.

The veteran’s award was won by Yea Golf Club member Christine Simmons with a score of 100-32-68.

Mrs Grinter thanked Ms Scott for supporting the KGC.

“T J Scott and Son Funeral Directors have been sponsoring us for quite a few years now …which we really appreciate,” she said.

CFA brigades unite

Nulla Vale Country Fire Authority (CFA) now have access to more fire fighting equipment and supplies, thanks to a generous donation courtesy of Boronia CFA.

Though located more than 85kms from each other, the two brigades have teamed up for a supportive and community-minded partnership, with the large, city-based team donating unused equipment from their brigade in exchange for some good, old-fashioned, rural off-roading fire fighting experience and training.

Nulla Vale CFA Secretary Leanne Freestone said the partnership would benefit both brigades and the communities they represented and protected.

“They’ve sort of partnered up … we’ll take them around and show them around the area and in the future, they’re hoping to come and do some joint training exercises with us,” she said.

“And then hopefully … if we have a big event, they’ll be able to come and assist, and provide a bit of back up.”

Boronia CFA Captain Ramon Relph said the decision to support the Nulla Vale unit was a collective one.

“We decided as a brigade to help out other brigades that needed some assistance … and Nulla Vale came up on our radar,” he said.

“I spoke to Luke [Freestone, Nulla Vale CFA Captain) as to what they needed, and I spoke about the equipment and the age of the equipment so we decided to … donate some hoses, and some new branch [pipes], as well as some other equipment that we’ve got that was sitting at the station, that we thought, ‘Well, we’re not using this, we can assist this brigade here.’

“It was more of a ‘What can we do to help?’. We’re in a pretty good position in Melbourne, but we know what the bridges out further are struggling with … and it was a members’ idea to see what we can do to help other brigades, so that’s how it all came about.”

The Nulla Vale unit currently have 28 members and 12 firefighters, but are always on the look out for more.

Broadford firies take on the Crown

Earlier this month, over 750 firefighters and emergency services personnel from across the nation embarked on a gruelling 28-floor climb up to the top of the Crown Metropol, decked out in 25kg of turnout gear and breathing apparatus to raise funds and awareness for the Peter Mac Cancer Foundation, Lifeline, and 000Foundation.

Broadford firefighters Adele Deverell and James Conboy made their debut in the 11th annual Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb event, keen to test their abilities and connect with their peers and the wider community.

Mr Conboy said the excitement around the event inspired him to participate.

“It was well talked about … it was a very good experience, very proud to be involved,” he said.

“It took myself five minutes and 11 seconds … and Adele smashed her time as well. We’ll train hard and have a crack again next year.”

Ms Deverell agreed with Mr Conboy’s sentiments, stating that the excitement turned into a mix of nervousness and adrenaline on the day.

“I was standing in line with this other guy from Portland and … you could tell we were nervous. The goal was under 10 minutes, and I got nine minutes and 12 seconds,” she said.

“The adrenaline definitely helped.”

Mr Conboy noted the event was one of the hardest activities he had ever participated in.

“I’ve played a lot of different sports, been very active my whole life, but this was easily the hardest thing I’ve ever done by far. But it was probably one of the best things I’ve ever done as well, for what it went to. There was no competition, everyone was very together, just one big team,” he said.

The event raised $794,410 for crisis support and cancer research.

Both Ms Deverell and Mr Conboy joined the Broadford CFA brigade last year, inspired to give back to the community.

“I’ve lived in Broadford my whole life, and I think I reached that age where it’s time to … start giving back to the community. It’s definitely been an eye-opening experience, but it’s good, you meet some really good people,” Mr Conboy said.

“I had some spare time and wanted to give back. And I think being here has just been amazing, you know, the mateship and the teamwork, and the experience as well—being able to give back,” Ms Deverell said.

The Broadford CFA brigade’s doors are always open, and the team are always on the lookout for more volunteers.

More kindergarten spaces in Kalkallo

Kalkallo North Community Centre will be expecting another kindergarten room thanks to a partnership between the State Government and the Hume City Council.

The Building Blocks Partnership, which includes up to $7.45 million invested to support five new and expanded kindergarten projects, will create up to 280 new 3- and 4-year-old kindergarten places across the Hume.

The funding will increase capacity and modernise facilities, including Roxburgh Park’s Bluebird Way Child and Community Centre, Craigieburn’s Child and Family Centre, and Mickleham’s South Community Centre.

The Kalkallo North Community Centre is expected to be completed in 2025.

Member for Kalkallo Ros Spence said she was excited to see the development.

“I can’t wait to see families in our community benefit from this announcement, with hundreds of new 3- and 4-year-old kindergarten places across Melbourne’s outer north,” she said.
