UPPER Deep Creek Landcare Network is partnering with TreeProject to bring a series of native plant propagation workshops to communities across the region in September.
Four workshops will be held in Lancefield, Sunbury, Gisborne and Wallan, providing residents with an introduction to native plant propagation and the opportunity to learn more about becoming a volunteer TreeProject grower.
TreeProject is a volunteer-based not-for-profit organisation that supports revegetation projects across Victoria by providing low-cost native seedlings to landholders and Landcare groups.
Since its establishment in 1989, volunteers have propagated more than two million seedlings, which have been planted through Landcare groups, landholders and environmental volunteers.
The organisation’s growing program allows volunteers to propagate native plants from seed in their own backyards before the seedlings are used in environmental restoration projects.
Participants do not need access to large amounts of land or specialist equipment to become a grower.
Volunteers register for a growing season of up to six months and are provided with training, a growing kit containing seeds, pots and potting mix, as well as ongoing mentoring and support.
The kit allows growers to produce up to 336 seedlings, with volunteers required to establish an outdoor growing area and water the plants each day.
The upcoming workshops will provide hands-on propagation training, with participants able to take some seedlings home and continue growing them.
The sessions are aimed at community members interested in learning how to grow native plants, as well as local groups considering ordering low-cost seedlings for future revegetation projects.
TreeProject’s growing model has been used by Landcare groups and landholders to access affordable native seedlings for environmental restoration projects across Victoria.
