A KILMORE family has launched an appeal to raise funds for its much-loved member coping with the most challenging time of her life.

Amy Joyce Batey, born in Kilmore and who grew up in Wandong, is battling cancer.

She completed her Year 12 at Whittlesea Secondary College and became a medical scientist after completing her Bachelor of Science degree at RMIT.

Life was all roses for Amy as she began her dream job at the Austin Hospital’s Microbiology Department.

Later, Amy married a Broadford businessman, David Birney, and together they have two children, Xavier, 10, and Lily, 9.

But Amy’s beautiful life was turned upside down when in May 2024, she was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. Over the following year, she underwent chemotherapy and surgery and received an all clear.

Amy’s aunt Lisa Alexader, a long-time Kilmore resident, said the celebratory period for the family proved short-lived as less than four months after completing treatment and getting the green light, she got the devastating news – cancer has spread to her brain, chest, and lungs.

Mrs Alexader said the family was heartbroken when told of doctors’ grim prediction that Amy, so lively and full of life and just 38 years old, has only a limited time to live.

Mrs Alexander has joined in a drive to raise awareness about cancer and help her niece in such a trying time.

She said it was heart-wrenching that after years of hard work and endless hours studying and getting a job at the Austin Hospital, Amy’s life has been shattered by cancer.

Mrs Alexander said Amy, her husband David and their children are now spending most of their time together, enjoying and making memories while they are able to.

“David is hoping to be able to spend as much time as possible supporting Amy through this difficult time and spending time together as a family.”

Amy’s sister, Kelsey Sunderland, has set up a GoFundMe campaign under “Amy Birney” to give some financial assistance to the family during this heart-breaking period and beyond, and help Amy continue her intensive treatment.

The appeal says “during this difficult time, Amy’s husband and their two beautiful children are facing an unimaginable journey ahead. To ensure they have the support and resources needed to navigate this tough moment and take the time to grieve together, we are launching this GoFundMe campaign.

“Your contributions will help ease the financial burden for her family, allowing them to focus on what truly matters — spending precious time together and cherishing each moment as they confront this devastating reality. Any amount you can give, no matter how small, will make a significant difference. Your love and support mean the world to us.

“Thank you for helping us honour Amy and supporting her family during this incredibly challenging time.”
