MEMBER for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has thrown her support behind Donnybrae residents demanding temporary traffic lights at a busy Donnybrook Road intersection.
Residents of the Donnybrae estate have launched a petition calling on the state government to install temporary lights at the corner of Willaroy Boulevard and Donnybrook Road. They argue the measure is urgently needed to improve safety for drivers attempting to turn right toward the Hume Freeway.
Donnybrook Road, a single-lane arterial, has long been plagued by congestion and safety concerns. Locals say peak-hour traffic makes it almost impossible to exit the estate safely, with morning commuters particularly affected.
Ms Lovell said the situation was the result of poor planning by the State Government, which she accused of approving rapid housing growth in Donnybrook without delivering matching transport infrastructure.
“Donnybrook Road is a total planning failure by the State Government, which has approved thousands of new homes in the area, and collected GAIC tax, stamp duty and land tax from Donnybrook homeowners, but refuses to invest that money in building desperately needed road and rail infrastructure,” Ms Lovell said.
Speaking in parliament this week, she backed the residents’ petition and urged the government to act immediately.
“I strongly support the call from Donnybrae residents for temporary traffic lights to help them safely exit the estate. I urge the Minister for Roads to immediately implement this practical temporary solution, because the State Government has no plan to properly fix Donnybrook Road any time soon.”
The petition remains open for signatures as residents continue their push for interim safety measures until a permanent upgrade of Donnybrook Road is delivered.
