Liberal Member for Northern Metropolitan Region Evan Mulholland is urging Wallan residents to sign his petition pushing to repair unsafe local roads.
He said local roads in Wallan were bearing the brunt of the State Government’s refusal to properly fund road repair with new data revealed in the State Parliament exposing a safety crisis unfolding across Victoria.
In the last three years, the number of Victorian drivers forced to seek compensation for vehicle damage from unsafe roads increased by 414 per cent.
Wallan resident Robert has been impacted by damage to his car by the road conditions including damage to the tyre which exploded ‘pretty magnificently’ once he reached the freeway shortly after going over a ‘giant pothole’ outside the Watson Street police station.
“Potholes sit there for weeks unaddressed and the road condition has been awful for over a year, particularly on Watson Street,” he said.
“They’ve put up 40 signs for non-existent road works and left them for six months now.
“I don’t see the point in reporting things when they’ve no doubt been informed of [them] numerous times, and it’s clear they just don’t care.
“I didn’t even bother trying to get the damage reimbursed despite the fact it was over $400 as the VicRoads threshold is conveniently four times the amount.”
Mr Mulholland said he was backing Wallan residents in the State Parliament with more than 500 locals now signing the petition.
“I raised the unsafe state of Wallan roads straight with the Labor Roads Minister in State Parliament,” he said.
“I’ve seen firsthand and heard loud and clear about the unsafe state of Watson Street and the Northern Highway.
“Instead of spending $200 billion on a suburban rail loop that Wallan will never benefit from, it’s time to get the basics right in the outer suburbs.
“Jacinta Allan’s Labor Party can’t ignore Wallan residents forever. The Liberals and Nationals are going to keep fighting for Wallan even if Labor won’t.”
Robert said the current government was not doing anything to address the state of the roads.
“The local MP has acknowledged the state of the roads in Wallan some time ago and nothing has been done,” he said.
“It’s clear they don’t care enough to fund VicRoads properly to allow them to address things in a timely matter.
“Perhaps a change of government will actually see something done about issues in Wallan for once?”
