THE City of Whittlesea is inviting community members to have their say on the future of pet management across the City of Whittlesea as it develops its next Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) 2026–2030.

The plan will guide how Council supports responsible pet ownership, responds to problems like barking dogs, dog attacks and strays as well as working with local shelters and animal welfare groups. It will also outline how resources are used to keep pets, people and wildlife safe.

This plan is an important step in keeping the community safe by addressing ways to reduce risks and improve the quality of life for both pets and residents.

The City Of Whittlesea is encouraging all residents—whether pet owners or not—to share their thoughts. Community consultation is open now, and residents can take part online or by visiting one of several pop-up conversation stands across the area.

A pop-up session has already been held at the Mernda Community Activity Centre, but further sessions will be held across the City of Whittlesea over the next three weeks, including at the Delacombe Reserve Fenced Dog Park in South Morang tomorrow afternoon, and at the Laurimar Town Centre on Thursday afternoon.

City of Whittlesea Mayor Councillor Martin Taylor said it was important that residents’ thoughts on pet ownership was heard.

“We are currently developing our next Domestic Animal Management Plan (2026–2030), and we want to hear from our community,” he said.

“By working together, we can create a safer, more harmonious environment for all, where the rights and responsibilities of pet owners are respected, and the wellbeing of animals and residents is protected.

“We encourage everyone to get involved and share their thoughts on the future of animal management in the City of Whittlesea. Together, we can foster a community where animals and people live safely and respectfully side by side.”
