Whittlesea residents will soon notice a colourful change to their household rubbish bins, with the City of Whittlesea set to replace all dark green bin lids with new red lids.
The update is part of a statewide move to standardise bin lid colours in line with the Victorian Government’s waste and recycling reforms.
The lid colour change will apply to the general waste bin, helping to create consistency across Victoria and reduce confusion about what waste goes where. The rollout will take place throughout May and June, with Council teams working street by street to make the change as simple and seamless as possible.
Residents don’t need to do anything special to take part. All that’s required is to place their rubbish bin out on their usual bin collection night and leave it out until 6pm on collection day. Council crews will come through on regular bin days to swap out the lids, ensuring minimal disruption to residents. The old dark green lids will be collected and recycled responsibly.
If a bin is not out on the kerb for collection and the lid is missed, residents are encouraged to contact Council to arrange a follow-up visit. The bin lid change will begin on Wednesday, May 1, and continue progressively through all areas of the municipality over the following weeks.
The City of Whittlesea supports the move towards clearer waste practices and encourages residents to learn more about the colour-coded bin system. Standardising bin lids across Victoria aims to make recycling easier and improve landfill diversion rates.
