Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell is calling upon the State Government to fund the Yan Yean Road Stage 2 Upgrades in the upcoming 2024-2025 Budget.
With the project still in its planning stage, Ms Lovell urged the government to start construction.
“The government must stop delaying this project, and get on with funding and completing the upgrades to Yan Yean Road.
“Yan Yean Road is a disgrace, and the process for planning and delivering the Stage Two Upgrades to Yan Yean Road has been shambolic.”
Victoria’s Big Build states that Stage Two of the project, which began in 2017, aims to build upon the ‘benefits provided by Stage One to improve safety and traffic flow through Plenty, Yarrambat, and Doreen.’
The proposed upgrades include the construction of two additional lanes in each direction, the installation of traffic lights, the addition of a new walking and cycling path, and the addition of a centre median and kerb side safety barriers.
Following a tragic accident last month that resulted in a young man suffering a severe brain injury after being clipped by a passing car, Ms Lovell argued that the upgrades were now a matter of urgency.
More than 24,000 vehicles per day travel along the road, and with traffic chronically congested on the narrow lanes, Ms Lovell stated that delaying the project was ‘deeply unfair to local residents’ who ‘cannot sell or move home because their houses are subject to possible acquisition’.
“This future road infrastructure is critical for connecting the growing northern suburbs,” she said.
The State Government’s 2024-2025 budget will be announced Tuesday, May 7.
