Whittlesea Christmas celebration returns for second year

Popular Stories

CITY of Whittlesea businesses, community groups and residents are once again coming together to decorate their own special Christmas trees for the Whittlesea Agricultural Society’s second Christmas Tree Extravaganza.

Kicking off on Friday, this year’s event is expected to build on the success of last year’s display and will feature more than 30 trees and fill both rooms of the agricultural society’s building at the Whittlesea Showgrounds.

This year’s trees will also be themed, with different businesses decorating their Christmas trees with items unique to their stores.

Whittlesea Agricultural Society president Erica Hawke said the event would feature a spot to take a family photo for Christmas.

“It’s the perfect place to come to get your Christmas family photo, we’ve got a few visits from Santa and backdrops for photos, as well as all the decorated trees,” she said.

“As a mum, I know how hard it is to get a good photo, so I think this is a great opportunity for families to get a photo close to home.”

The event provides an opportunity for young children to see Christmas trees and lights during the day, with appropriate opening hours and a short distance from home making it easier for all family members to enjoy an impressive Christmas display.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to vote for their favourite trees at the event, with the community group with the most votes to win the combined tree entry money.

“We’ve had people saying [last year] was better than the Myer window, which means a lot to us because it’s something in the local area and you don’t have to travel down to the city to see a display like this,” Ms Hawke said.

“I encourage people to stop by and have a wander when they get the chance.”

The Whittlesea Christmas Tree Extravaganza will be open from 12pm to 9pm every day from December 9 to 23 at the agricultural society administration building, located at Gate 1 McPhees Road, Whittlesea. Entry will be a gold coin donation.
