SOME clubs were very quiet over the last fortnight, thanks to the disruption of the AFL Grand Final and a significant downpour over the weekend. That didn’t stop all though, with some clubs looking to make huge improvements.
GOLFER OF THE WEEK: Sandy Wicking
What a couple of weeks it has been for Kilmore’s ladies’ vice-captain, who not only beat everyone off the stick in the Kilmore Toyota Par 3 day, but was also a huge part of the club’s annual Gordon Howells Challenge Bowl, winning the competition with Robyn McPherson and Helen Dennett.

BROADFORD was forced to postpone its monthly medal and Doing it for Jarrod Day due to the rain on Saturday. Doing it for Jarrod Day is something any golf club can take part in. It is a day that raises money for kids with cancer in honour of Jarrod Lyle, an Australian professional golfer who lost his life to cancer. Players typically wear a piece of yellow clothing and raise money for charity while also enjoying a round with some mates. It is fantastic to see Broadford Golf Club take part in the day.
At HIDDEN VALLEY, it was a reasonably quiet couple of weeks due to the rain. This was a continued trend across most of the clubs, which doesn’t help this week’s segment of Covering the fairways. Ashton York (20) took out the Grand Final day stroke competition off the blacks, finishing four under his handicap. On Wednesday, September 30, it was a big day in the Stableford competition, as two people finished on 43 points. Billy Linton (6) had an unbelievable round off six, going one under off the stick for the first 11 holes before having two bogeys in a row to finish his round one over. Great round.
KILMORE has had a busy couple of weeks with the Par 3 day and the ladies’ bowl. Both days attracted players from far and wide, making them very successful for the club. Sandy Wicking dominated both days, taking out our Golfer of the Week award, as mentioned earlier. The course looked fantastic, and the new short course seems to be a major win.
LANCEFIELD held its Open Championship on the Friday before the AFL Grand Final, which was a major success for the club. Seventy-two players represented 22 different clubs from across the region, making it a full field. Edward Carracher (Euroa Golf Club) won the day with a 71 off the stick, defeating Cameron Pascoe by three shots. Lancefield member Denis Davenport won B Grade and, similarly, another local member, Lachlan Giles, took out C Grade. It was a successful day, made possible by many volunteers who helped with everything from course clean-up to running the bar.

It was a busy day at ROMSEY on Sunday, as the club held a working bee to help clean up the course. A group of 20 people got down to help with the general clean-up and the creation of a new soil bay. Unfortunately, the rain halted many of the competitions at Romsey. On Grand Final day, the club was forced to finish halfway through the competition due to the weather. Again this week, after buckets of rain, no golf was held over the weekend. In good news from the club, a clubhouse of its own could be a possibility, as it currently shares one with the Romsey Bowls Club. The club is exploring a relocatable or modular building that would give the golf club its own dedicated facility while remaining part of the broader Romsey sporting precinct. It is also looking to grow participation levels by holding women’s clinics and school clinics at the primary school.
