The State Government has made a move on the proposed development for the small town of Clarkefield.

The planning minister will refer the Clarkefield development proposal to an independent advisory committee for review and advice.

The proposed development would bring 2,300 new dwellings to the current township, upgrading it’s main streets and community facilities.

But not everyone is for the proposal, saying the town itself is simply not ready for the boom in population – read more here.

It comes after months of delays to the decision, which was initially expected in August.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has welcomed the decision, saying it has consistently maintained that it is not seeking to predetermine the outcome of the proposal, instead advocating for a fair process that allows decisions to be based on evidence, expert advice and community input.

“Council has consistently called for this proposal to be subject to proper scrutiny before any decision is made. We welcome the Minister’s decision to refer it for independent review, ensuring the evidence, planning considerations and community perspectives can be thoroughly examined,” Mayor Cassy Borthwick said.

“This is not a final decision, but it is an important step. It recognises that the questions being asked by our community deserve careful and independent consideration.”

The potential developer of the proposed $725 million ready-to-build township is happy to see the proposal progress, welcoming the referral of the project.

The project will be referred to the Priority Projects Standing Advisory Committee, with all submissions received on the project to be independently assessed by a specifically appointed standing advisory committee.

Three residents still live on Station Street in Clarkefield, but say they have had no direct consultation with the government about the proposal.

The Review will sit down with the three locals next week to discuss their experiences and whether they are for or against the development.
