RESIDENTS have expressed their safety concerns due to a lack of lighting over reconfigured road lanes between Ironbark Road and Jorgensen Avenue on Yan Yean Road.
New lane alignments and temporary line markings have reportedly made it hard to see where drivers should be travelling in the dark.
The concerns were raised shortly after Stage 2 of the Yan Yean Road Upgrade began construction, which has changed the layout and flow of traffic in both directions in sections between Bridge Inn Road and Kurrak Road.
State Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell raised the issue in parliament on behalf of Liberal candidate for Yan Yean Amanda Dow who had met with members of the public who shared concerns for their safety.
Ms Lovell called on the Minister for Roads and Road Safety to take action on the matter.
“Safety on our roads must be a priority at all times, so I have called on the government to install temporary lighting along Yan Yean Road to improve safety while Stage 2 roadworks continue,” she said.
A Big Build Roads spokesperson told the Review they have since implemented further lighting upgrades at the Yarrambat Park entrance.
Existing street lighting around the Ironbark Road intersection and elsewhere along Yan Yean Road has been maintained.
This is on top of the additional street lighting installed at the temporary pedestrian crossing south of Ashley Road, a recommendation from the pre-construction road safety audits.
“Public safety is of the utmost importance during construction on any Big Build Roads project,” the spokesperson said.
“The project team will continue to monitor road safety and traffic conditions as construction progresses along Yan Yean Road and will implement any additional measures needed to support traffic flow and community safety.”
