AMID bird flu concerns, pigeon racing across Victoria has been stopped for the Victorian Racing Pigeon Union, but the Wallan Kilmore Homing Club was able to get a club race in with Government approval to start the first race of the Melbourne Cup series.
The race was held from Bendigo in fine conditions, with 11 flyers and 620 birds greeted by a south-easterly wind.
Lancefield’s Mario Drago took the win, with a fly time of 1.10.28 hours and a velocity of 1217.880 metres per minute.
Alby Putker was second, with a velocity of 1196.588 metres per minute, with Jamie Loft finished third with a velocity of 1158.076.
