ROMSEY is about to get a new drop-in centre offering connection and support for anybody feeling overwhelmed or distressed, or having thoughts of suicide.
The Safe Space will initially open fortnightly at the Romsey Neighbourhood House, with first guests welcome on Saturday, August 8 from 1 to 4pm. It is free and no referrals are necessary.
Carers and other people supporting somebody through mental health challenges are also welcome to attend, with or without their vulnerable person.
An initiative of the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group, this will be the second Safe Space operating in the shire being run by volunteers trained by Roses in the Ocean, a national suicide prevention organisation. The other Safe Space opened in Woodend in 2024.
All trained peer workers have lived experience of mental illness personally or through people they know. They will listen, offer understanding, and share their stories if helpful.
The Safe Space is not a crisis service however it is somewhere that people can go for support including non-judgmental conversation and quiet reflection. Time may be spent privately talking with a worker or in the company of other guests, sharing a cuppa and perhaps playing a game or enjoying a relaxing activity. Information about mental health services and community resources are available to take away.
Safe Spaces recognise that while people’s life circumstances differ, they often struggle with similar emotional distress and may be at risk of serious mental decline. Apart from experiencing suicide ideation, guests may be navigating grief, loss or other personal challenges.
Individuals who want to learn more about mental wellbeing and resilience are also welcome to visit.
Volunteers are urgently needed to run the Romsey Safe Space. Comprehensive training including self-paced learning and workshops is facilitated by Roses in the Ocean, which provides ongoing mentoring and support.
