VICTORIA’S Big Build is looking to ensure the Watson Street Interchange has a lasting legacy by creating a piece which reflects Wallan’s identity, landscape and community spirit.

A new rest area will be located on Watson Street on the south-eastern side of the interchange, which will go along with the upgraded shared walking and cycling path.

The space will include a new permanent public art installation, interpretive signage and seating for people to rest up.

Victoria’s Big Build says the location was selected to align with feedback from the Department of Transport and Planning and Mitchell Shire Council, as well as provide good visibility, support safety and maintenance, minimise the environmental impacts and integrate with the new infrastructure.

Now, Victoria’s Big Build wants to hear from the Wallan community.

The community will have the opportunity to vote for one of three artwork themes, suggest a name for the new rest area and share ideas for how the new rest area can shape the town.

There are three artwork themes people can choose from – local history, which celebrates Wallan’s past and the stories of the town, including early transport routes, faming history and local landmarks; native flora and fauna, the natural environment that makes Wallan unique, including plants, trees, birds and wildlife; and people and culture, the people who make up the Wallan community.

An opportunity to chat to the project team is available tomorrow from 3pm to 7pm at Wellington Square Shopping Centre, or you can vote on the Victoria’s Big Build website.
