ALLAN BORDER’S WORDS
Allan Border was a great Aussie cricket captain. He rescued this nation’s cricket from a bleak period in the 1950’s. He was a tough leader. Test cricket is a tough game and needs hard men at the top. Writing an opinion piece about this summer’s Ashes battles in Australia; he noted that England will be led by a tough guy in Ben Stokes. England’s Ashes winning captains in this country included Douglas Jardine (infamous Bodyline captain), Johnny Douglas, Len Hutton and Ray Illingworth. As Border noted “they were killer skippers who took no prisoners”. England’s maybe greatest batsman of all time-Walter Hammond (pictured) was unsuccessful as leader on two visits to the country spanning the second World War.
OSCAR THE STAR
The brilliant young Aussie F1 star Oscar Piastri is proving a real champion on and off the circuit. Humble, with strong family values, he recently went back to address the students at Haileybury in London where he was a boarder and keen cricketer for four years.
CRAIG THE GREAT
Melbourne Storm rugby coach Craig Bellamy is a true legend of the code. His 600 games at the helm were recently celebrated. Many rate him as the finest coach of any of the football codes in Australia. Former ACK student Matthew Tripp has been chairman of the club for more than a decade.
