MITCHELL Shire Council is set to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety in one of Wallan’s busiest streets with the installation of a new raised pedestrian crossing on Windham Street.

Funded by the Department of Transport and Planning and the Transport Accident Commission’s Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, the project aims to slow vehicle speeds, improve visibility, and strengthen connections to key community spaces.

The new crossing, located between Watson Street and Queen Street, will: give priority to pedestrians and cyclists, introduce a 40km/h speed zone, feature improved signage, line marking, and lighting, include enhanced drainage for the raised structure, connect with the existing shared user path and link Hadfield Park to the upgraded Wallan Community Park.

Works are scheduled to begin the week of September 8 and are expected to finish by late October, weather permitting. Construction will take place from 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

During these works, Windham Street will be reduced to a single lane with traffic management allowing vehicles to travel in both directions.

Access to Wallan Community Park from Windham Street will be closed, with alternate pedestrian access via Wedding Drive. The entrance to the 1st Wallan Scout Group hall will also be temporarily closed for driveway upgrades.

Partial lane closures for asphalt works will occur, with further updates to be provided to the community. Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time while works are underway.
