WALLAN residents can now enjoy the newest addition to outdoor spaces following the official opening of the Wallan Central Cycle and Nature Trail Project on Thursday.

The transformation is part of upgrades to the Wallan Community Park, creating a hub for play, exercise and connection to nature.

The upgrades, jointly funded by $800,000 from the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund and $220,000 from Mitchell Shire Council, include a nature play trail, rope climbing course, sand play, a “Roll and Ride” learn-to-ride track, new paths, planting for shade and habitat, picnic seating and interpretive signage.

Member for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage said the project was a milestone for the growing community. She praised the Wallan Environment Group for their foresight in revegetating the parkland, which has become a cherished part of the community landscape.

“Our kids can still have the same type of experience and connection to nature that we grew up with,” she said.

“They can still discover the natural world we are so blessed to live in. This is a fantastic asset for our community.”

Mitchell Shire Mayor Councillor John Dougall said the project exemplified how partnerships between local and state government could achieve meaningful outcomes.

“We’ve transformed an underutilised open space into something vibrant, open, and accessible right in the centre of Wallan,” he said.

“It’s a place that encourages people to be active, connect with friends and family, and enjoy a healthy lifestyle outdoors.”

Cr Dougall emphasised the significance of the Growing Suburbs Fund, which has funded vital projects throughout the shire.

“This is another example of integrated outcomes: working with the State Government to deliver real value for our community.”

Wallan Scouts, whose hall neighbours the park, took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony, symbolising the role young people will play in enjoying and caring for the space.

With the Wallan Central Cycle and Nature Trail Project now complete, the public can enjoy all its features, with the entrance accessible diagonally across from the Wallan Police Station and just next door to the Wallan Scout Hall.
