Whittlesea looked to make it two from two in the Northern Football Netball League division three senior women’s competition, but while they made their home debut for the year at the Whittlesea Showgrounds, they also ran into a red-hot Kilmore outfit in the process, fresh off a 120-point win to kickstart their campaign.

The Eagles were under the pump right from the word go on Sunday afternoon, with the Blues putting scoreboard pressure on almost immediately.

Before one could breathe, the Blues were four goals up, and they would render Whittlesea goalless in the opening term, trailing 27-0.

While the Blues would kick the opening two goals of the second quarter, Whittlesea were impressive in being able to fashion a response when they went forward, and it was Tayla Wood who got the Eagles on the board for the first time, finishing truly in front of goal.

However, Kilmore continued to be relentless and added two more goals in the late stages to extend their margin to 47 points at the main break, leading 53-6.

Whittlesea were unable to build on their positive second term as the second half started, with Kilmore regaining control of the midfield battle and dominating territory.

As a result, chances were few and far between for the Eagles, and Kilmore went into the last quarter buoyed by three more goals to make it a 67-point game, 73-6.

When the Blues kicked three more goals to open the last quarter in quick succession, the margin was 85 points, but Whittlesea had a positive finish to the last quarter, managing their second goal of the afternoon through Alexandra Baker-Murphy, and ensuring the margin would not pass 100 points.

The 2.0 (12) to 15.9 (99) result was simply a case of Whittlesea running into a red-hot opponent, with Olivia Hodgson, Kaila Vangeli, Eden Attard, Julie Pole, Ivana Pecanac and Giselle Rabaud-Salas giving their all despite the result.

Elsewhere, Laurimar fell just two goals short of recording a drought-breaking victory, losing to Epping at Epping Recreation Reserve by 11 points, 1.4 (10) to 2.9 (21), while Wallan defeated Darebin 2 by forfeit.

In division two, South Morang spoiled Panton Hill’s flag unveiling party at AE Cracknell Reserve, winning by 48 points, 6.15 (51) to 0.3 (3).
