The Eagles maintained an unbeaten start to the season with a convincing win over St Mary’s at the weekend.

Whittlesea 10.14.74 def St Mary’s 6.25.6. The Eagles retain third position on the ladder behind South Morang and Diamond Creek.

Eagles coach, Gary Ramsay said that he was very happy with the side’s performance and position on the ladder to date.

“We have had a good start to the season with our two wins and the challenge now is to keep up the effort and I am sure we can do this,” he said.

Goals came from Christian Prestopino and Jaron Murphy with three each, Paul Higgins booted two and Clancy Bland and Xavier Dimasi added to the score with one goal each.

“I am pleased with the team’s performance over the past two Saturdays the boys played exceptionally well together and this resulted in a good game. Although the pressure at times impacted our kicking for goal but in that aspect I think St Mary’s was impacted more than we were,” Ramsay said.

Eagles captain Xavier Dimasi led his team through four impressive quarters. Dimasi proved solid with his ability to win the ball in many close contests.

Lachie Shinn-Mahony starred in his senior debut with an impressive passage of play delivering the ball to Christian Prestopino giving him the opportunity of scoring his third goal for the day.

Jaron Murphy proved unstoppable with his three goals, one of which taking the title of goal of the day.

Things looked pretty much over for St Mary’s with the Whittlesea lead of 15 points at half time and the side continued to dominate despite missing three attempts at goal in the fourth quarter.

Our defence was impressive. On many occasions we kept St Mary’s in some very difficult positions on the ground and I am sure this had an impact on their kicking,” Ramsay said.

Next week Whittlesea hosts Watsonia at home in the third round of the season.

In other Northern Football League games, Laurimar lost to Lower Plenty 10.13 73 to 10.17.77. South Morang has a convincing win over Watsonia 14.16.100 to 11.8.74.
