Excitement is building among bike riders for the new dirt jumps track at Painted Hills Recreation Reserve in Doreen.

The purpose-built track is the first of its kind in the municipality, designed to accommodate riders of all skill levels—beginner, intermediate, and advanced.

The City of Whittlesea developed the track in response to increasing demand from youth for more dirt jumping facilities.

Dirt jumps—constructed from compacted soil—allow riders, typically on mountain bikes, to perform a variety of tricks.

Before the track was built, a lack of dedicated facilities led to the creation of unauthorised jumps on council land, especially during the Covid-19 lockdowns.

The track at Painted Hills Recreation Reserve is part of a 12 month pilot program designed to assess the community’s interest in dirt jumps.

The success of the council-funded initiative, which launched in September 2024, will be determined by the track’s usage and how well it is maintained by the riders.

Council hosted a series of ‘Learn to Dig’ workshops in the lead up to the opening, to teach riders how to effectively maintain the jumps.

City of Whittlesea Mayor Councillor Aidan McLindon said it was thrilling to watch youth enjoy the track.

“Thanks so much to the group of enthusiastic young people who have made this fantastic project possible,” he said.

“Council was able to assist by working closely with [youth] to help design the track to bring their vision to life.

“It’s great to see so many young people now enjoying the jumps and having this space to hang out with their friends.”

Riders are encouraged to share their feedback throughout the 12 month trial by visiting www.engage.whittlesea.vic.gov.au/dirtjumps.
