In September, a delegation from Mitchell Shire returned from a ‘seiko’ (successful) visit to Honbetsu, Japan.

This delegation, as part of the Mitchell-Honbetsu Sister City Program, included local students and representatives who travelled to the small town to celebrate and strengthen the 30-year bond between the two regions.

The delegation enjoyed a packed itinerary that offered an in-depth look into the rich culture and traditions of Honbetsu.

Highlights of the trip included visits to local farms, where delegates observed traditional agricultural practices, and historical landmarks that provided insight into the town’s heritage.

Honbetsu’s warm hospitality was felt through and through, with gracious homestay families generously welcoming the shire’s visitors into their homes, offering the delegates a firsthand experience of Japanese day-to-day life.

As part of the visit, gifts were exchanged to local school leaders, strengthening ties with local schools that additionally saw the delegates participate in joint activities, fostering cross-cultural learning that will enrich both communities for years to come.

The Mitchell-Honbetsu Sister City Program has always been about connecting cultures and building friendships. This year’s delegation to Japan has not only honoured the two regions’ shared history, but also brought the communities closer through new experiences and learning opportunities.

Looking ahead, the Mitchell-Honbetsu Sister City Program remains committed to fostering connections between the communities. The continued exchanges, supported by dedicated community members and hosts, strengthen the bridge between these two towns, proving that friendship truly knows no bounds.

In early February 2025, the Sister City Program will be thrilled to welcome a delegation of 31 students plus staff from Honbetsu to Mitchell Shire.

The program is seeking homestay families to host these visitors, offering them a warm, local experience. Families interested in opening their homes are encouraged to reach out by emailing mitchell.honbetsu@gmail.com.
