Southern Mitchell Shire semi-retired and fully retired residents no longer have to travel north or further into the city to meet like-minded folk, with the launch of Wallan’s Probus Club earlier this spring.
Now the fourth Probus Club in the region—a social networking group for professional (‘Pro’) and business (‘bus’) retirees—the group has rapidly expanded and now boasts an impressive 40 members.
Wallan Probus Club President Joy Marshall was pleased that the community had responded positively to the club’s launch, attributing its popularity to its prime location.
“I think that’s why we’ve grown so quickly,” she said.
“We’re all quite surprised at just how quickly it has grown. It’s obvious that there’s a need for it.
“We started off with 28 [members] on our opening day which was really unbelievable. We’ve now got 40 [but] we’d rather not go over 60. We don’t want to get too big too quickly.”
The club meets every second Wednesday of every month at Hogans Hotel Motel Wallan at 10.30am, with many exciting outings to be discussed in the coming weeks.
“We’ve had a walk and dinner so far, plus our normal meetings,” Ms Marshall said.
“We’ve been very fortunate that we’ve had Hogans look after us, which has been really helpful for us.
“We welcome anyone who is retired, and just want to meet up with some new friends and have some activities and outings.”
