The North Central Review is an independently owned newspaper publishing company based in Kilmore that is responsible for publishing two community newspapers each week, covering communities within the Mitchell Shire

An innovative project to assist people in the Mitchell Shire with disabilities was presented to councillors at the August Community Questions and Hearing Committee by resident Mandy McCracken.

Ms McCracken outlined the Get Started Disability project and asked Council to support her to introduce a referral system based on the Maternal and Child Health model, as there is little to no support for residents in the Shire who are newly diagnosed with a disability.

Councillor Fiona Stevens sought clarification on the program due to a concern that Ms McCracken could be smothered with requests from people who want to work with her.

Ms McCracken said the project would be a point of contact with someone who has the insight, the lived experience, and the knowledge of what is out there and the willingness to share it.

Cr Stevens asked if Ms McCracken would be willing to share her findings with Council so that they may have services and public spaces audited by a person with lived experience of disability.

Ms McCraken agreed and said that it was part of the grant auditing process to report back on findings.

Councillor Nathan Clark additionally asked if Mitchell Shire would be the first project before being leveraged with neighbouring Councils.

Ms McCraken said that this was the plan, and the Goulburn Regional Partnerships said they would welcome it.

“I keep reflecting on Maternal and Child Health and how they are doing this. If we can just follow suit and do whatever they are doing if its working, I’d love to just replicate how they have it set up,” she said.

The meeting finished with a final question from Cr Stevens, asking for Ms McCracken to consider good governance for the project, and Ms McCracken advised she has a board with experience but there is room for more people to join.
