Another slippery weekend for the Riddell District Football Netball League (RDFNL), but the slip-and- slide conditions did not let the teams across the district put a stop in motion.

Round 15 saw Romsey footballers host Woodend-Hesket on wet grounds while its supporters were trying to stay warm under cover, but also to watch a game which was struggling at first.

Romsey were on the backfoot for most of the first half, letting Woodend-Hesket to come in and kick the first two goals, with only a behind from Romsey.

The Redbacks were given critical feedback from their coach between the first and second quarter, and while the scoreboard was still showing Woodend’s lead during the second quarter, the match went the opposite direction after half time.

Romsey started to get the contest right in the last quarters, possessing four goals, and two behinds, forming a 16-point lead by the end of the third quarter, and walked away with a 52-27 win in the last quarter.

Coach Justin Sherman said it was pleasing to watch the turnaround in the second half, with a great amount of contribution from the side.

“The ability when things aren’t going your way and turn it around in the second half, it was really pleasing, I’m really proud of the group,” he said.

“Overall, the contribution in the second half was really strong, but obviously our captain Nathan Blair I think led the way with his leadership, and ended up really impacting off our backline for us.”

With the Redbacks currently second on the leaderboard, under Riddell, Sherman said the side were ‘processed driven’ at the moment.

“We’re not really putting a ceiling on what we want to do, but we definitely want to try and push to finish as high as we can, I think we’re just stuck in the process at the moment,” he said.

“We just want to make sure that every week we rock up to play, that our processes are strong, our structures are really strong, we’re playing a role for the team, and the results will take care of itself.

“Hopefully, these next three games are huge for us.”

Nearby, Lancefield also played at home, hosting Macedon footballers in a shivering match.

But the cold conditions began to warm up for the footballers, with Macedon executing four goals in the row, while the Tigers also got their hands on the ball afterwards, kicking two goals.

Despite the 20-point lead from Macedon, Lancefield still put the effort in, rounding its footballers to play the second quarter, and producing the first two goals.

The match ended in the third quarter as neither team made any form of goal in the fourth quarter, which meant Macedon kept its winning title for the match, with a 38-55 win.

Round 16 this weekend, Lancefield will travel to Kyneton, Romsey will take on Riddell, and Wallan will return from a bye to host Melton Centrals.

Netball

In the netball universe, Lancefield A Grade netballers were quick for the first period, but the side could not meet the same standards in the last few periods.

Coming off from a tied match against historic rivals Romsey in round 14, Lancefield was in front, but it all came tumbling down once Macedon started to shoot, and formed a three-point lead by the end of the second period.

The Tigers battled in the third term, fighting for the ball across the court, however Macedon continued to stretch its lead, and secured the 20-41 win.

Lancefield coach Ciara Stewart said the attack was not as strong on the day, and the side would be ready for Kyneton this weekend.

“We were very disappointed with our whole team attacking performance against Macedon,” she said.

“Our key wing attack player was unavailable and that took its toll on our attack end that we couldn’t recover.

“A positive of our game is that our full court defensive pressure was outstanding. Had we converted just half of those won balls, we would have been up there for the win.”

Just a few kilometres away, Romsey also grasped a battle against Woodend-Hesket.

Faith was somewhat in the process by the end of the first period, with only a four-point lead from Woodend, but after a few periods, the ball kept going in for Woodend, and they took the 38-58 win.
