Hard wet win for Mernda footballers

Kilmore took the wet and winding road down to Waterview Recreation Reserve to take on Mernda in the Division 3 round 16 on Saturday.

It was a vital game for the seventh placed Blues to keep their finals hopes alive, with Mernda in a better position in third place on the ladder.

The game was always going to be a challenge for Kilmore with Mernda in the solid position of clocking up consecutive home ground wins for the past three seasons.

Kilmore was hoping to score a win over Mernda, considering the Blues’ narrow two point loss when both teams met in their Round 8 clash at the JJ Clancy Reserve.

The Blues put up a valiant fight all day against a strong Mernda who were able to maintain an edge in the trying conditions.

Filling in at full-back, Grant Paxton played an enormous game full of courage and desperation and was an easy choice for the Blues’ senior player of the week.

Lachlan Chesher led the goal scoring for Kilmore with three majors while Bailey Taylor-Egan, Ethan Derrick, Ben Schraven, and Emmett Clark scored one each.

In a day that turned on possibly the worst conditions of the season, Mernda came out winners 8.14 (62) to Kilmore 7.2 (44).

Best for Mernda were Kai Turner, Josh Mazzarella, Christian Evans, Jesse Guelfo, Riley Black,and Kyle Yankos. Best for Kilmore were G Paxton, C Barton, B Barton, K Maher, M Marrett, and L Chesher.
