Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell is inviting residents to participate in a national road survey.
Launched by Shadow Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Tony Pasin, the survey will allow residents to nominate a road or intersection most in need of upgrades, maintenance, or repairs.
Mr Birrell acknowledged the impacts of the Federal Government’s funding cut to roads, noting that maintenance issues were being experienced firsthand by road users, and particularly by the agricultural and transport industries.
“Every week, many drivers across our region spend hours behind the wheel dodging damaged potholes, reducing speeds on rough surfaces, only to see temporary repairs take place,” he said.
“I know firsthand how terrible some parts of the road network have become, and I hear from locals every day about the need for their local road to be repaired or upgraded.
“Our agricultural and transport industries drive economic growth for Australia and support thousands of jobs, and it’s time the Labor Government invest in those industries.
“I’m calling on the residents of Nicholls to help shine a light on the appalling condition of our roads by taking part in this national survey. Let’s send the Albanese Labor Government a message to fix our roads, because drivers deserve better.”
Mr Pasin shared Mr Birrell’s concerns, emphasising the importance of upkeeping Australia’s road network.
“Australia’s 880,000kms of road network underpins almost every aspect of our lives. From getting to and from work and school to getting produce off the farm and off to market, a good road network underpins the efficient and safe movement of people and goods, and it’s critical to competing in a global market,” he said.
“Motorists take responsibility for ensuring their vehicle is roadworthy and pay taxes and charges for the privilege to use our road network. In turn, a core responsibility of Government is to ensure the road network is up to standard. It’s very clear from the condition of roads across the country that the Albanese Labor Government is not living up to its end of the bargain.”
