A new mural at the Whittlesea Public Gardens in Lalor is in the works, with local artist Roger Wilkie aka Chehehe, commissioned to deliver the project.
Chehehe is a Melbourne-based multimedia whose work focuses on language, symbols, repetition, and pattern. His mural will intend to capture youthful engagement and be a lasting addition to the gardens.
Once completed, the mural will be included in the City of Whittlesea’s Cultural Collection, a collection of civic history, visual art, and public art.
The redevelopment of the gardens is currently in Stage Two, and features a 100m long level skate park, basketball courts, and picnic shelters. The mural will be integrated into the functionality of the park, doubling as a rebound wall on one side, with a boulder and climbing wall on the other.
The City of Whittlesea hopes that the redevelopment will be a much-loved feature of the community that re-energises and creates a modern space for residents to get active, socialise, and enjoy the outdoors.
Stage Two is expected to be completed this month, with access to the new area opening shortly after.
