THE City of Whittlesea will donate $15,000 to humanitarian charities as a further show of support to Turkish and Syrian communities following the earthquakes earlier this month.
Chair administrator Lydia Wilson, who moved an item of urgent business at last week’s council meeting, said it was important to continue to offer support for those affected.
“We note with deep concern and sorrow the earthquakes which have impacted communities in Turkey and Syria,” she said.
“And we know there are more than 3000 people in the City of Whittlesea who identify as having Turkish and Syrian background.
“While we held a vigil last week to show we were standing with our community, we now want to show our support and solidarity with these communities by contributing financially to the cause.”
A donation of $15,000 will be made to the Emergency Action Alliance who will support Turkey and Syria through a group of humanitarian charities.
