A Merry Pigmas from ‘Tottie’ at Edgar’s Mission

Popular Stories

LANCEFIELD’S Edgar’s Mission animal sanctuary has welcomed its newest rescued resident – a piglet named Tottie.

Tottie has wasted no time showcasing her affable personality at the not-for-profit refuge for formerly farmed animals, living her life with ‘agency and purpose’ according to Edgar’s Mission founder Pam Ahern.

“She happily trots beside us, and loves it when you rub her glorious belly,” Ms Ahern said.

The team at Edgar’s Mission is hopeful that Tottie will remind consumers to make conscious meal choices throughout the Christmas season.

The sanctuary will celebrate the festive season with a plant-based Christmas feast, surrounded by animal residents like Tottie whose lives have been spared from the dinner plate.

“With kindness, Tottie has blossomed into the intelligent, fastidiously clean, fun-loving, and affectionate pig she had the opportunity to become – an opportunity denied to so many other pigs who will face a very different fate this Christmas,” Ms Ahern said.

“We can all make an enormous difference in the life of pigs, turkeys, lambs and others by what – and not who – we choose to eat and buy this festive season.”

Edgar’s Mission has released a free kind Christmas guide packed with delicious plant-based recipes for the whole family.

“Our personal favourite comes from award-winning cookbook author Zacchary Bird and his famous pavlova – or ‘fablova’,” Ms Ahern said.

“There is also a kind gift guide, an advent calendar featuring a new kindness tip each day, and cute animal gift tags to get the whole family involved.”

Edgar’s Mission is this year celebrating its 19th Christmas after another life-changing year.

With about 400 formerly farmed animals currently in its care, many with special needs, Ms Ahern said 2022 was a year that saw some of Edgar’s Mission’s most challenging rescues and biggest transformations.

“Edgar’s Mission has rescued 150 new animals in need over the past 12 months, and has found forever homes for over 193 animals, whilst assisting with rehoming many more,” she said.

“We also supported the community with over 500 animal assistance enquiries and provided guidance, support and advice for sanctuaries within Australia and beyond in 2022.

“Each and every one of us can make a world of difference in the lives of animals just the same as her, simply by being kind.”
