IN-FORM Kilmore trainer Hanna Powell produced a smart debutant in Ultimate Kiss at Moe on Thursday.
Confidently backed from $13 to $8.50, the three-year-old gelded son of Redente and the good-producing mare Ellakeire, was most impressive in taking out the $35,000 TM&H Mitre 10 Maiden Plate over 1000 metres.
Ridden by Jamie Mott, the gelding defeated the $3.50 favourite Smug Sister by one and one quarter lengths, with Maranzano, $5.50, a half-head away third.
“He’s a really nice horse going forward and I can imagine him getting over seven furlongs (1400 metres) and he’ll be probably better again,” Mott said when dismounting.
“He really loved the ground (heavy nine) and the breed get through it and I was confident he’d get through it.”
Powell bred the gelding and races him with her husband Ian.
Ultimate Kiss is a half-brother to this month’s back-to-back winner, Kiss Me If You Can, and Kissee Me, an eight-time winner.
Meanwhile the talented stablemate Just Jake, the winner of over $200,000 in prizemoney, who raced in the same interests, was luckless at Caulfield on Saturday.
Coming in at odds from $31 to $18, Just Jake had to travel three-wide for most of the 1400-metre journey only to be beaten less than three and a half lengths.
