Wallan Panthers hope to sign up more than 500 junior players for the summer domestic basketball season.

A total of 66 sporting clubs and community groups across the region have received financial support to recover from the financial hit that occurred due to recent COVID-19 restrictions.

The State Government’s Sporting Club Grants Program was made available to assist clubs that incurred costs lost due to the cancellations and postponing of events, allowing clubs to secure grants of $2000.

The grants can be used to cover cancellation fees for facilities, coaches and officials, as well as loss of perishable goods and booking fees.

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence said the grants aimed to help rebuild communities.

“This is about helping support our community clubs and their members get back to the playing field and resume momentum as safely as possible,” she said.

“Sporting clubs have been recovering strongly this year and this funding will give them the best chance to rebound and do their communities proud in these challenging times.”

Since 2014, the government has provided more than 8300 sporting club grants totalling more than $12 million to clubs across the state.

The next round of the program is due to open later this year with grants available for new uniforms and equipment, training coaches, officials and volunteers and improving club operational effectiveness.
