BROADFORD Cemetery Trust is holding a gathering at the Broadford Cemetery in Piper Street to honour the dead on All Souls’ Day.

It will be the fifth consecutive year of the event, which will start at 2pm on November 2.

Chairman of the Cemetery Trust Paul Fleming said the event is becoming a tradition that is important to a lot of people.

“Our remembering of those we have known and loved, be it in the Broadford cemetery or elsewhere, is a lovely ritual which has grown in popularity,” he said.

The service includes a reading of the names of those interred in the past year, and everyone present is invited to light a candle for those they are remembering, whether from the past year or earlier times.

“Reading the names out aloud is a very meaningful way to remember people we have loved and lost as we light a candle for each,” Mr Fleming said.

All Souls’ Day is also known in some cultures as the Day of the Dead, and all are welcome, regardless of their faith tradition or lack thereof.

The blessing of the graves by pastors of the Christian churches concludes the ritual, which is followed by refreshments.

“The blessing is a lovely opportunity for us to come together in our common grief, especially as we lead up to Christmas time,” added Rev Cathy Turnbull of the Anglican Church.
