WEATHER conditions couldn’t have been better for the bowlers in the Highlands Saturday Pennant, but mixed results plagued the regions teams in division 1.
Romsey are looking the goods on its quest for back-to-back Highlands titles, defeating Diggers Rest 73-32 in a rousing away win to go three from three to start the season.
Team 2, skippered by Marc Bullows, was unbelievable on their way to a 31-4 win which made it impossible for Diggers Rest to match the Romsey juggernaut.
A big clash between Lancefield and Kilmore went the way of the Tigers at the Lancefield Bowling Club, 67-48.
Kilmore’s Team 1 skipper Lance Whitnall led his quartet to a 20-15 rink victory, but a dominant showing from Lancefield’s Lloyd Dyamond, Shane Ray, Bev Holmes and Jeff Holmes on Rink 2 swung the match in its favour.
Lancefield won Rink 3 23-15 to keep its undefeated start of the season going, only missing a win due to a wet green in the first round.
Elsewhere, Woodend was far too good for Broadford, taking out the matchup 79-37.
Team 3, consisting of Alan Sharpe, Mark Jones, Darryn Lee and Daryl Kelly, was the only shining light for Broadford as the side fell to sixth on the division 1 ladder.
In division 2, Kilmore easily accounted for Mt Cottrell to ensure its position on top of the ladder was safe for another week.
Romsey had to battle hard to fight off a valiant Gisborne team, eventually winning 23-22, 13-11, 24-25 across the three rinks to take a 60-58 win and move into second position.
Division 3 didn’t offer the same results for the local sides as the top grades did.
Lancefield defeated Kyneton as a result of a forfeit, while Broadford and Kilmore lost to Mt Cottrell and Macedon respectively. Romsey had a bye.
Lancefield and Kilmore will host home games on Saturday in division 1, while Romsey travel to Woodend and Broadford head over to Kyneton to face Kyneton Golf.
Kilmore’s matchup will be especially important, facing the ladder-leaders Gisborne will surely be a good checkpoint for how the team is tracking.
