THE Whittlesea community will reap the benefits of their own voting after the Whittlesea Park Community Circuit Trail won $150,000 in funding through the Pick My Park project.
The community voted for the Whittlesea City Council’s submission to upgrade the trail in round two of the project’s funding scheme.
The project is estimated to cost $300,000 and will deliver the first section of the shared path in Whittlesea Park.
The overall park upgrade will include a shared walking, cycling and mobility path, seating and rest areas and avenue tree planting for shade and urban greening.
Fitness stations are also expected to be installed along the path.
Pick My Park is a $30 million program which is designed to give the community a say on park upgrades in their area.
Residents over 16 years old were given the chance to vote for three park projects between June 20 and August 3.
The circuit path upgrade has been one of the most popular recommendations based on community feedback to the Whittlesea Park Master Plan.
A total of 48 projects were selected to share in $9.34 million in the latest round of funding with the aim to upgrade parks, playgrounds and community spaces across Melbourne.
State Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny said the program will improve work and lifestyle outcomes for across the state.
“Planning for good quality open spaces close to public transport, jobs and services, will give more Victorians well-connected, great places to live,” she said.
“Living near good quality open space has benefits for everyone, and parks and public open space has been identified as a top priority for people as part of our extensive engagement process for Plan for Victoria.”
The Review contacted the City of Whittlesea for comment, but we did not receive a response before the deadline.
