THE State Government has announced another expansion to its Chemist Care Now program, allowing women to access a one-month resupply of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) at participating pharmacies.

The change applies to women between age 45 to 59, or any women aged 30 years or older with confirmed surgical menopause.

They must also have seen their GP within the last 12 months and have used the same MHT for at least six months.

Consultations will be free, but patients will still need to cover the cost of the medication at the counter.

The government said that regional women who may have a harder time accessing GP services quickly will be a key beneficiary of this expansion.

State Minister for Health Ingrid Stitt added that the expansion will save people both time and money.

“Living with menopause can be tough, that’s why we want to make life easier for Victorian women,” she said.

Pharmacists are required to conduct a thorough consultation in a private room before dispensing any medication and outline any risks.

Those who need further care will be referred to a medical practitioner.

The announced expansion also includes the addition of certain reflux medicines over the counter.

Data collected by the government suggests women have benefitted the most from the Chemist Care Now program, accessing more than 68 per cent of the total services.

This includes 50,000 uncomplicated urinary tract infection treatments and 23,000 consultations for hormonal contraception resupply.

Local chemists across the Mitchell and Macedon Ranges shires offer Chemist Care Now services.

The Better Health Channel advises that you contact your chemist or check their website to find out what services they offer and if a booking is required for a consultation.
