Community unites for police remembrance day

IT was a solemn day of reflection last Tuesday as local communities paused to remember the 178 Victoria Police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty on National Police Remembrance Day.

A formal service was held at the Victoria Police Memorial on St Kilda Road in Melbourne and was attended by officers from across the state.

In the community, Gaffney’s Pie Kitchen in Seymour was once again showing its support with donations collected from specific sales on the day put towards the Blue Ribbon Foundation.

One dollar from each pie sold went directly to the cause, resulting in an incredible $1024 being raised.

National Police Remembrance Day is an Australia-wide day to reflect on those who have been killed while serving the community, and coincides with Blue Ribbon Day.

Blue Ribbon Day is its own initiative which aims to raise money for new and improved emergency facilities in Victorian public hospitals.

The Blue Ribbon Foundation first launched Blue Ribbon Day in 1999, and has since raised more than $12 million.

A particularly solemn tone accompanied this year’s remembrance events across the nation with the deaths of Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart in Porepunkah last August still front of mind.
