THE City of Whittlesea’s Economic Growth Strategy 2026–2036 was endorsed at the Council Meeting last Tuesday, providing a blueprint to strengthen the local economy, attract investment, and create more accessible employment and education opportunities over the next decade.
As one of Australia’s fastest-growing municipalities with a population that is expected to increase 33 per cent to about 360,000 residents by 2036, the City of Whittlesea is poised to play an increasingly significant role in the Melbourne and Victorian economy.
The Economic Growth Strategy sets out a 10-year plan to leverage this growth to generate greater investment confidence, more employment and education pathways, and lasting benefits for the community.
It focuses on four key directions that Council can lead and influence through partnership, advocacy, planning and facilitation, that being: business growth and innovation; investment and infrastructure for industry growth; skills and knowledge for the future and a vibrant and inclusive economy.
The strategy was informed by data, industry trends and community feedback, ensuring it strengthens the local economy and increases opportunities closer to home, to directly benefit residents while supporting business growth and competitiveness across the City of Whittlesea.
It will be delivered through rolling two-year Economic Growth Action Plans, each of which will identify Council initiatives, roles, timeframes and measures to ensure priorities are clear and progress can be tracked. Action plans will start in 2026, and the strategy will be reviewed in 2031 to ensure it remains aligned with changing economic conditions and community needs.
City of Whittlesea Mayor Councillor Lawrie Cox said it was a plan to ensure Whittlesea continues to grow.
“The Economic Growth Strategy sets out a clear vision for the long-term prosperity of businesses and families in the City of Whittlesea,” he said.
“By aligning investment, infrastructure and innovation, we are creating the conditions for a sustainable, thriving local economy.
“Continuing to support local businesses as they launch and grow, while providing a diverse range of career and learning pathways close to home, enables residents to actively participate in our economy and ensures our region remains an attractive destination to visit and invest.
“With growth comes opportunity. This strategy reflects a shared vision to unlock benefits for our entire community and shape the City of Whittlesea’s future for generations to come.”
