Give the trees a chance
I read this week’s letter, Trees planted, washed away, regarding the recent planting along Kilmore Creek at Andrew Street.
After reading it, I decided to have a look for myself out of curiosity
What I saw certainly didn’t match the picture painted in the letter. The newly planted trees and shrubs appear to be largely intact and, considering the amount of rain we’ve had, seem to be doing perfectly well.
There may have been a small number affected by the heavy rain, but suggesting that many have been wiped out and that the planting was a waste of ratepayers’ money seems a considerable overreaction.
In fact, the area is looking quite good, and once the plantings become established it should only improve.
Perhaps sometimes it’s worth giving these projects a chance before declaring them a failure.

A service captures the heart
A huge shout out to Seymour College for presenting another fantastic service today.
It captured the essence of what the day represents and the display of photos of the 18 soldiers killed at Long Tan was incredibly moving.
The two young women who MC’d the event were extremely well prepared and I’m sure their words touched the hearts of Veterans and their families as it certainly did mine.
Well done to everyone involved in presenting the day, from the wife of a Vietnam Veteran.

Don’t miss car rego rebate
Victorians who paid their vehicle registration for the 2025–26 financial year may be eligible to claim back 20 per cent of their registration costs.
Applications for the Victorian Government’s car registration rebate close on 31 August, so I am reminding local residents who have not yet applied to check their eligibility and make a claim before the deadline.
The rebate is available to eligible Victorians who paid their registration for the 2025–26 financial year, and the 20 per cent rebate can provide a small cash boost at a time when household costs continue to put pressure on family budgets.
With the deadline fast approaching, I encourage residents to take a few minutes to check whether they are eligible and submit their application before 31 August.
For those who have already claimed, there is nothing further to do. For everyone else, now is the time to check.
