ARE you looking for a new role to play in 2026? A local charity that offers food relief and support to low-income earners, the unemployed, and people in regional communities is seeking volunteers.
Having been established after the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009, Freedom Care Inc. Kilmore centre operates as a registered charity under the Pentecostal Christian Church and has helped more than 13,000 people in the community with food relief in the past financial year.
Inside its premises, one can find a layout like a regular supermarket – with shelves stocked with donated and purchased items including fresh fruit and vegetables, bakery items, refrigerated and frozen foods, tinned goods, soaps, baby formula, cereal, pet food, and an op shop.
Freedom Care volunteers’ roles include serving shoppers, stacking and replenishing shelves, and sorting op shop donations. The hours of operation are each Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Volunteer Jo Webster said: “We have had lots of new clients come in recently. Oddly enough, we haven’t had anyone from the bushfires. But we helped the pastor in Seymour who has been helping them.”
“We are always looking for people to help on the registers, Saturday not so much, and we are always looking for donations,” Ms Webster said.
“Everyone here is a volunteer and it’s not about looks. It’s about their willingness to want to do it and to fit in with everyone else. I would love to have some people who are willing to use the register.”
Freedom Care is located at 127C Northern Hwy, Kilmore, and to join the team, phone Ms Webster on 0422 599 735.
