A MEMORABLE finals run to remember was completed by Seymour’s reserves on Sunday at Deakin Reserve, coming all the way from fourth to secure the premiership.

It was the second and last quarters which proved to be the critical quarters for the Lions in what was a thrilling encounter with minor premier Kyabram.

A big struggle in the first quarter saw just one goal kicked, but Seymour had its opportunities to score as well. However, the Lions could only manage four behinds as they trailed 8-4 at the first break.

Suddenly, the momentum shifted in the second quarter as the Lions started like a house on fire, starting with a Julian Morgan special from the pocket for their first goal. Morgan’s goal set his teammates alight, with Jack Radford soon adding another, before a third goal saw the Lions increase their lead to 14 points.

While Kyabram had a late answer, Seymour still led 22-14 at the main break.

Seymour was first to hit the scoreboard in the third quarter, and in difficult conditions, it looked like its 15-point cushion was going to be hard to catch.

But Kyabram was minor premier for a reason and kicked the next two goals to close in on the Lions. At three-quarter-time, scores were tied at 30-apiece.

It was a big test of Seymour’s nerve when Jarryd Pertzel goaled early in the last quarter to put Kyabram in front, but to Seymour’s credit, it showed its never-give-up attitude right to the end and was rewarded with two big goals to turn the game in its favour.

First, Radford kicked his second, before Dylan Davis ensured the premiership would go to Kings Park, handing the Lions a 6.9 (45) to 5.8 (38) victory.

Lachlan Waite showed all the form which handed him the best player of the finals, while also being named best on ground, with Alexander Elliott, Curtis Powell, Davis and Radford also named in Seymour’s best.

Seymour’s terrific day was confirmed when it also won the B reserve netball premiership over Rochester, 44-30.

The Lions virtually led all afternoon, skipping out to six-goal breaks at quarter time and three-quarter-time, before a 12-goal to four final term ensured they would take the premiership.

Shona Gesler scored 21 goals for the Lions, with Mia Allen adding 19.
