A RESPECTED Plenty Fire Brigade volunteer has been remembered for his dedication to community and charity, with two local CFA brigades unveiling commemorative plaques in his honour.

Greig Wanless, who passed away in April 2024, was described by fellow volunteers from Yarrambat and Plenty as “keen, enthusiastic and humble.” For years, he was a familiar face at the busy Yan Yean and Ironbark Road intersection each Good Friday, collecting donations for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

The annual fundraiser, first organised by Yarrambat Fire Brigade 11 years ago, has since raised close to $85,000 for the hospital. This year, both brigades created plaques that will record the total raised annually through their combined efforts, ensuring Wanless’s contribution is remembered alongside the ongoing community support.

At a gathering at Yarrambat Fire Station on Sunday, CFA members, family, and representatives of the Good Friday Appeal came together to celebrate Greig Wanless’s service. Yarrambat CFA’s Sue Mountain recalled him as a great friend, a loyal teammate, and someone passionate about helping sick children.

“Greig was always part of the Good Friday team, rain, hail or shine. He was committed, not just to the cause, but to the people he served alongside,” she said.

The plaques were officially unveiled by Wanless’s wife, Karen, joined by their children Alannah, Matilda, and Will. The moment was marked with pride and emotion, reflecting the impact of his volunteering both within the CFA and across the community.

Claire O’Riordan, Community Fundraising Manager for the Good Friday Appeal, also paid tribute, acknowledging the wider CFA contribution to the much-loved cause.

“It’s the people’s charity that improves the lives of children, and we will be forever grateful,” she said.

For local CFA members, the plaques stand not just as a reminder of the money raised, but of the spirit of camaraderie and service embodied by Mr Wanless.
