MEMBER for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage visited LB Davern Reserve on Thursday to see how the upgraded Wandong Community Centre has improved connections and opportunities within the community.
The $800,000 project was finished late in 2004 and has provided a range of improvements that transformed the centre into a functional and welcoming community hub.
The works involved installing new male, female, and accessible toilet facilities, a fully renovated kitchen, and a larger meeting room with more storage space.
Accessibility and safety improvements to parking, fencing, gates, and surfaces have also made it easier for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the space.
The project was made possible with $720,000 from the Victorian Government, $20,000 from the Wandong and Heathcote Junction Sports and Community Centre Committee of Management, and $60,000 from Mitchell Shire Council.
Mitchell Shire Mayor Councillor John Dougall said the transformation of the centre was already making a positive difference.
“The upgrades have created a facility that can cater for a wider range of events and activities, giving local groups the space and amenities they need to thrive,” he said.
“It’s fantastic to see this investment making a difference for the people of Wandong and surrounding areas. I would also like to pay tribute to the late former Cr Sue Marstaeller. Sue was a tireless advocate for her community and played an important role with the committee.
“Her dedication and passion helped lay the foundations for projects like this, and it’s fitting to acknowledge her contribution as the community enjoys the upgraded centre.”
