SEYMOUR will host Mitchell Shire’s 2026 Australia Day Community Awards and Citizenship Ceremony, with the Rotary Club of Seymour confirmed as organiser.
The decision was passed unanimously at Mitchell Shire Council’s August meeting, following an expression of interest process between community groups in Seymour and Wallan.
Rotary’s winning proposal will have the event held at Seymour’s Kings Park. Council said the Rotary Club of Seymour’s strong community connections, long history of service and proven ability to deliver successful Australia Day celebrations made it a fitting choice.
The club has been active in Seymour and surrounding districts for more than 75 years, regularly organising fundraising initiatives and civic events. Seymour last hosted the awards and citizenship ceremony in 2023.
The Wallan and District Community Group also made a strong bid, suggesting they host the 2026 celebrations at the Wallan Multipurpose Community Centre. While acknowledging the group’s valued contribution to local cultural and inclusive events, councillors backed Seymour Rotary’s experience and resources in managing large-scale gatherings.
Rotary’s involvement sustains a proud tradition in Seymour. Each year, the club organises local Australia Day celebrations starting with a community breakfast and flag-raising ceremony, followed by family entertainment, children’s races, community displays, and the Seymour Community Service Awards.
In 2026, the event will also include the presentation of Mitchell Shire’s Australia Day Community Awards, recognising outstanding local contributions, and the official Citizenship Ceremony, welcoming new Australians.
Council said it looked forward to working with Seymour Rotary to deliver a day that honours community spirit, celebrates achievements, and brings people together across the shire.
