SEYMOUR may not be playing finals in the Goulburn Valley competition this season, but the Lions have shown that they have been capable of good football this season, as Saturday’s 113-point win over Tatura showed.
The Lions were determined to put away the Bulldogs at the first possible opportunity at Tatura Park, but although they had 11 shots at goal in the first quarter, the kicking boots weren’t quite on to start with, converting for only three goals as they led 26-1 at the first change.
Seymour was able to get its game going in the second quarter, and it wasn’t willing to let Tatura get into the contest. Riley Mason was again putting forward his ability to kick quick goals, booting four for the half, while Jackson Mansfield also had a good quarter, adding two goals. The end result was Seymour leading 70-13 at the main break.
The Lions remained relentless in the third quarter, adding another five goals to Tatura’s two, and the idea of a 100-point victory was starting to creep into calculations. It was a 106-26 lead to Seymour at the final change.
It was party time for Seymour in the final term as Mason and Jack Murphy continued their dominance of the last few weeks. Murphy kicked the first two goals of the quarter, while Mason added three more to take his tally for the day to nine, as the Lions cruised through to win 22.19 (151) to 6.2 (38).
Mason was a clear best-on-ground with his nine majors, while Nathan Beattie, Jack Peris, Dylan Cook and Murphy were also solid performers alongside him.
The Lions’ senior campaign will come to an end next Saturday at Kings Park against the finals-bound Shepparton as they seek a 10th win for the season.
However, Seymour will have football representation in finals, with the reserves comfortably qualifying with 13 wins.
