WHEN SkinGP opened its doors in July 2024, it brought something new to the Macedon Ranges: a purpose-built, specialist skin cancer clinic offering expert care, cutting-edge diagnostics, and a mission to save lives through early detection.

Now, a year on, the clinic has already made a significant impact in diagnosing and managing numerous melanomas, many in patients who had no visible signs or suspicions to the naked eye.

Dr Arul, founder and lead doctor of SkinGP said the key to better outcomes was early detection.

“Every Australian is at risk of skin cancer,” he said

“Seventy per cent of us will face it at some point in our lives. And every 30 minutes, someone in Australia is diagnosed with melanoma. These are not just numbers, they’re people in our community.

“That’s why we’ve invested in state-of-the-art technology like full body photo mapping and advanced dermoscopy systems. These tools allow us to detect changes in the skin long before they’re visible to the naked eye.”

A clinic built on specialisation

SkinGP focuses exclusively on skin cancer medicine. That means, every doctor at the clinic is not only highly trained but also deeply experienced in diagnosing and treating skin cancers every single day.

Dr Loshna, one of the clinic’s accredited doctors, explained the significance of that title.

“Being an accredited skin cancer doctor means I’ve completed advanced training and rigorous assessment through the Skin Cancer College Australasia,” she said.

“It’s the only body in Australia and New Zealand that offers formal accreditation in this field. It’s a mark of excellence—and it means our patients are getting care from someone who exclusively focuses on skin cancer, not just someone who dabbles in it.”

A personal passion for prevention

For Dr Bronwyn Edmunds, the work is personal. Having grown up in Queensland—often called the skin cancer capital of the world—she’s seen firsthand the toll sun exposure can take.

“In Australia’s climate, it’s easy to accumulate significant sun damage just by going about our daily lives,” she said.

“What many people don’t realise is that sun exposure from decades ago can still lead to skin cancer today.”

Dr Edmunds said the good news is that because skin cancers develop on the surface of the skin, they can often be detected early if people get them checked.

“At SkinGP, our skin checks include total body photography and a thorough, top-to-toe examination. If we find anything suspicious, we remove it and send it for testing. It’s simple, it’s effective, and it saves lives.”

A community resource

Located at 44B Anslow Street, SkinGP is open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.

The clinic’s approach is not just about treatment, it’s about education, prevention and empowering patients to take control of their skin health. Whether it’s a routine skin check, a suspicious mole, or a history of sun exposure, SkinGP provides a safe, supportive environment where patients can receive timely, expert advice and care.

“We’re proud to be part of this community,” Dr Arul said.

“We’re here to support patients with expert care, education, and a commitment to prevention. Our goal is zero deaths from melanoma—and we believe that’s possible.”

Time for a check?

If you haven’t had a skin check recently, or ever, SkinGP’s doctors say now is the time.

“Skin checks should be part of your regular health routine,” Dr Edmunds said.

“The earlier a melanoma is found, the better the outcome. Very early melanomas are highly curable. But we can’t treat what we don’t find.”
