Eyebrows and other beauty vanity mistakes I have made

DUE to advancing in age, I have a problem keeping my eyebrows in shape. By Fran Cleland.

When I take my glasses off, I can’t see them, with them on I can’t do them, so I get them done by the beautician at my local hairdressers.

The problem is the older lady that used to do them isn’t there anymore.

I should have known, the new, sparky young thing brightly handed me a form—a form!

“I just want my eyebrows done,” I said.

“Oh, but we like to know things about you,” smiling brightly she said.

What, asking me health questions, all the usual ones, to get eyebrows done?

There was also a waiver to sign to say if I croaked from anything she did I couldn’t sue.

Was she going to scald them clean off?

You can see where this is heading can’t you?

So, next, she asked if I get my hair done here?

“Yes,” I said.

“Do we cut and colour it?” she asked.

My hair is silver, grey! I said no.

Then she suggested a tint for my greying eyebrows (I should have known) and I thought, oh well, ok it’s been done before.

Install the word–fool here, in exceptionally large letters and big black type!

On we went. She asked me if I wanted to look in the mirror at the finished work, and for some reason I said no and, thinking back, possibly just as well.

My husband looked at me oddly all through the day, and late into the evening I could see why.

I stood there in front of the bathroom mirror open mouthed and silent.

I had two giant fat brown caterpillars perched on my brow above my amazed eyes. It’s a wonder my husband hadn’t panicked and grabbed a roll of paper and swatted them. I admire his self-control.

They were totally the wrong shape for my face, fatter than usual and an amazing shade of chocolate brown. Against the silver, grey hair, they were certainly eye catching.

But for the next month until they grew out, I had weird eyebrows. They looked like bats with their wings spread across my face and there was nothing I could do about it.

I should have known. I’ll have to search for someone else, or track down my old beautician.
